Marc Cucurella scored a second-half goal to help Chelsea defeat Leicester City 1-0. This victory lifted Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League standings. Initially, the game was frustrating for Chelsea, particularly in the first half when they were denied a penalty. Referee Darren England rejected a call after Luke Thomas fouled Cole Palmer in the box.
Chelsea received another chance to score when Jadon Sancho was fouled by Leicester’s Victor Kristiansen, leading to a penalty kick for Palmer. Palmer had not scored or assisted in his last six Premier League matches prior to this game. He was expected to convert the penalty, but it was saved by Leicester’s goalkeeper, Mads Hermansen. This miss surprised the crowd at Stamford Bridge since Palmer had never missed a Premier League penalty before.
After Palmer’s failed penalty, Leicester almost took advantage of Chelsea’s shaky confidence at this point. Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, misjudged a cross from James Justin, leading to a dangerous moment. Tosin unintentionally headed the ball onto the crossbar, but Levi Colwill was there to clear it before Jamie Vardy could score from the rebound.
In the second half, Chelsea came out with more energy and took the lead around the hour mark. Cucurella scored with a low strike from distance that went past Hermansen and into the bottom corner of the goal. His goal turned out to be the match-winner, giving Chelsea a much-needed boost after a rocky start.
The victory marked Chelsea’s fourth consecutive home league win. Meanwhile, Leicester City struggled, remaining in second-to-last place in the league. This loss was a continuation of their poor form, marking their twelfth loss in the last thirteen matches in the top flight.
