Chelsea Extends Ian Maatsen Contract Amid Interest From FC Barcelona 

Chelsea has activated a clause extending Ian Maatsen’s contract till June 2025 amidst rumoured interest from La Liga giants FC Barcelona.  After having successful loan periods with Charlton, Coventry, and Burnley, the 21-year-old made his Premier League debut last year.

Maatsen has been a part of Chelsea squad since 2018. He helped Vincent Kompany’s team score 101 points and win the Championship the previous season. Maatsen’s contract was supposed to expire next summer but the Blues already exercised their option to extend it. Barcelona was thinking of signing the young player for free the next summer, or in January for a low-cost deal.

In the Premier League this season, Maatsen has made six substitute appearances as the left-back has found it difficult to move up above fellow rookie Levi Colwill in the starting eleven. Although Mauricio Pochettino has only seen the adaptable Maatsen play defence, he is also capable of playing a winger. Chelsea’s next game is on Saturday, October 21, at Stamford Bridge against Arsenal.
