Steve Cooper, the manager of Leicester City, asserts that his team has “proof” that VAR did not function properly during their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.
Mateta’s second-half stoppage-time penalty salvaged a point for Crystal Palace in a 2-2 draw with Leicester at Selhurst Park few days ago. Crystal Palace dramatically fought back from two goals down to hold Leicester City to a 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park in the Premier League.
In the draw, Mateta had a goal disallowed for offside. VAR determined that he was level with the final defender, allowing the strike to stand. Although Palace was behind 2-0 at the time, they managed to rally for a point.
As it stands, Cooper claims that Leicester has evidence that VAR was incorrect. Citing multiple social media posts from a different frame that shows Mateta was offside. These images could serve as the foundation for Leicester’s argument. Cooper, however, believes there has been a cover-up.
He told reporters: “We’re over it now. It was an awful human error that we believe has been hidden a little bit. We have seen different images that show he clearly was offside. But unfortunately they froze it at the wrong time and he was deemed to be onside. Everything that has been seen has been a false image.
“On Monday we showed the Premier League with clear footage that actually the game was stopped at the wrong time. Decisions go against you whether it’s in-game or VAR and we’ve had a massive error go against us.
“We don’t want it to go under the radar because I don’t think that’s right for the players or for the supporters. Errors like that shouldn’t happen and it’s why we’re changing to the semi-automated system.
“We felt very let down by it. We needed to stand up for the club and tell the Premier League what we thought.”
The PGMOL has maintained that Cooper is incorrect. They have defended the choice taken during the match this past weekend. It’s unclear if Cooper will get a penalty from the Premier League for his remarks. However, Leicester takes on Everton this weekend.
