Nigeria claimed a late win over Libya, courtesy of a Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s strike at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The Super Eagles won 1-0 to continue unbeaten at the AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign. They dominated almost the whole game but could not find a way through until the dying minutes of the game.

The hosts lost several opportunities as William Troost-Ekong, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi missed good chances.

Early in the second half, Iwobi failed to connect well with Bruno Onyemachi’s cross from six yards. The Fulham man then fired Lookman’s pass high and wide from the centre of the box minutes later.

Lookman looked to had broken the deadlock for Nigeria in the 83rd minute but was ruled out for offside. However, replays showed that the Atalanta star was onside when the ball was played, but was unlucky as VAR was not in use.

Nigeria finally got the winner in the 87th minute. Substitute Dele-Bashiru connected well with Moses Simon’s cross to secure the maximum points for the West African.

The win ensures Nigeria remains at the top of their group with seven points from three matches. A win for Nigeria in the return leg in Libya on Tuesday would ensure early qualification for the finals of the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
