Novak Djokovic once again turned the pages of history after claiming a gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.
The 37-year-old outlasted Carlos Alcaraz in a entertaining gold-medal match to win his first Olympic gold medal.
The Serbian has now accomplished the Career Golden Slam by winning every “Big Title” that was up for grabs. Eighty-two Grand Slam titles, trophies from the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 events, and gold medals in singles Olympic competition make up Djokovic’s collection of 72 “Big Titles.” For 16 of the previous 18 seasons, the Serbian has won at least one Big Title.
Nobody else has won a major, all nine Masters 1000 events, and the gold medal in Olympic singles. In terms of Grand Slam titles (24), Nitto ATP Finals (7), and Masters 1000s (40), the Serbian holds the individual men’s record. Djokovic’s dream competition has always been the Olympics.
London and Tokyo saw the Serbian, who won a bronze medal in Beijing, place fourth. He changed the course of events in Paris, having lost the Wimbledon final against Alcaraz in straight sets the month before.
Of the 225 events he has played in, Djokovic has won one “Big Title” for every 3.1. Rafael Nadal is the player who has won one of every 3.5 tournaments played, which is the closest to him in terms of winning percentage at these events.
The 99-time tour-level champion, according to Infosys ATP Stats, will now focus on becoming the third player to surpass 100 titles, after Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). Gold medals from the Olympics and participation in tournaments are included.
Murray (2012), Djokovic (2016), Nadal (2008), and Agassi (1996) all won gold in the Olympic singles competition.
