D’Tigress has qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics on Friday night in Antwerp, Belgium despite a heavy defeat to USA on Friday evening.
As a result, D’Tigress, who also performed at Tokyo 2020, has secured back-to-back appearances at the main event.
Although D’Tigress fell to a heavy defeat at the hands of World champions USA 46-100 on day two at the qualifiers on Friday, they still sealed their place in the forthcoming Olympics tournament after Senegal’s 97-66 defeat to Belgium ended their quest for the ticket.
The six-time women’s Afrobasket winners made their debut Olympics appearance in Athens in 2004, and the recent ticket means they will be featuring for the third time.
The 72-65 victory over Senegal on Thursday in day one was crucial for Coach Rena Wakama’s side, which has now made it to the Olympics for the third time in the country’s history.
Nigeria, who have won the Afrobasket Championship four times in a row, will play Belgium in their final qualification match on day three. The outcome of this match is meaningless for both teams because they have already qualified for Antwerp Group A, while the USA qualified as World Champions.
Also, Nigeria will make her return to the big show in 2024, which might see them improve on two 11th-place finishes.
