Due to financial constraints, Nigeria’s basketball team, known as the D’Tigers, has withdrawn from the Afrobasket qualifying tournament.
D’tigers announced this on Wednesday night in response to their grievances on their lack of federal assistance.
According to The PUNCH, President Bola Tinubu resolved the unpaid balance that FG owed the Super Eagles and other national sports teams in January.
The payment includes paying allowances and pledges owed to the senior national teams, women, and Under-20 national team, as well as clearing the senior national team coaches’ salary for up to 15 months, according to a statement released on Sunday on Tinubu’s Media Center’s X account.
The announcement says, “President @officialABAT has approved the payment of N12 billion that is still owed to Nigeria’s national teams, including the Super Eagles and other teams in various sports.
“The payment comprises paying allowances and commitments owed to the senior national teams, women, and Under-20 national team, as well as clearing the senior national team coaches’ salary for up to 15 months.
On the other side, D’Tigers stated on its X handle, “Due to a lack of government funding, D’Tigers forfeit this AfroBasket Qualifiers window despite several 2020 Olympians committing.”
