Eguavoen resigns as Nigeria interim coach

Augustine Eguavoen has announced his decision to step down as the interim coach of the Nigerian national football team.

Eguavoen announced this on Tuesday after the Super Eagles draw against Rwanda.

The technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, was appointed after Bruno Labbadia rejected his appointment with the Federation.

He was in charge of two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda. He led the Eagles to beat Benin 3-0 before playing a goalless draw 0-0 against Rwanda.

Eguavoen explained that his mandate was for two games, after the game at the Kigali Airport.

“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I will want to say I am very pleased with the boys. And again, thanks to the NFF leadership and all the boys who supported me. It ends today. I can’t talk about Libya, because I haven’t been told about it”, he said.

However, Eguavoen has also dismissed a report that he quitted the Super Eagles. He stated that he was no longer the interim coach but still the technical director.

“Whatever people are reading out there is not correct, I am still in charge,” Eguavoen clarified on arrival in Nigeria from the match in Rwanda.

He said, “I am the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation saddled with the responsibility of taking the Super Eagles at this moment and that is where we are. I only talked that I am going to sit down with hierarchy of federation after these two games and see how we prosecute the next games.”

“It’s quite unfortunate that people trigger what is not correct and the situation we’re in we don’t need negative stories”, he added.
