Manchester United played a 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday night in Istanbul.
The home team started quickly, but it was United who struck first. Christian Eriksen scored a well-taken goal to give his side the lead. Just before halftime, Andre Onana made an excellent double save to keep United ahead.
However, early in the second half, Youssef En-Nesyri’s header brought Fenerbahce level. Both teams pushed for a winner, but neither managed to break the deadlock, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
United have now drawn all three of their Europa League matches this season. After the game, Andre Onana spoke to TNT Sports, expressing his frustration. He said:
“It’s very disappointing for me, for the club. We have an obligation to win at Manchester United, which we didn’t do.” He also acknowledged the challenge of winning away, adding, “We also have to recognise that this is a tough place to win.” Onana explained that despite being “angry,” they must “take our responsibilities and move on.”
Reflecting on the game, he adds, “We had more control than them” and praised the team for showing character after conceding early in the second half. Unfortunately, we didn’t win but I think we were better than them.It doesn’t matter (on his double save). The important thing is to win. Today, we are going back angry because we came here to win.”
Onana’s double save was key in keeping United in the lead during the first half. He earned an 8/10 rating in post-match reviews for his efforts. In a crucial moment, he made a great save by diving low to his right to stop En-Nesyri, then quickly got up to block another header from the same player.
Fenerbahce was dangerous in attack at that point, and a goal in the 37th minute would have given them confidence going into halftime.
