African football was witnessed in a new light in Marrakech, Morocco yesterday night, as Nigerian football stars — Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala won the 2023 African Player of the Year for their categories. This is the first time two players from the same country will headline both the men’s and women’s category ever since the Women’s accolade started in 2001.
No doubt, Nigeria was the biggest winner of the night, as their women’s category scooped two additional accolades, but other countries and players under CAF were also recognized for their footballing exploits in the year 2023.
The final winners in each category were determined via a voting procedure that included a panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee members, Head Coaches, National Team captains, and media professionals from the concerned countries.
As seen above, Morocco was also a big winner, as the North Africans also carted away four categories including the men’s coach goalkeeper and team of the year to acknowledge their impressive feat in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
