African football was witnessed in a new light in Marrakech, Morocco yesterday night, as Nigerian football stars — Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala won the 2023 African Player of the Year for their categories. This is the first time two players from the same country will headline both the men’s and women’s category ever since the Women’s accolade started in 2001.

No doubt, Nigeria was the biggest winner of the night, as their women’s category scooped two additional accolades, but other countries and players under CAF were also recognized for their footballing exploits in the year 2023.

The final winners in each category were determined via a voting procedure that included a panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee members, Head Coaches, National Team captains, and media professionals from the concerned countries.

  • Men’s Player of the Year: Victor Osimhen (Napoli and Nigeria)
  • Women’s Player of the Year: Asisat Oshoala (Barcelona and Nigeria)
  • Men’s Coach of the Year: Walid Regragui (Morocco)
  • Women’s Coach of the Year: Desiree Ellis (South Africa)
  • Men’s National Team of the Year: Morocco
  • Women’s National Team of the Year: Nigeria
  • Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year: Yassine Bounou (Al-Hilal and Morocco)
  • Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year: Chiamaka Nnadozie (Paris FC and Nigeria)
  • Men’s Young Player of the Year: Lamine Camara (Metz and Senegal)
  • Women’s Young Player of the Year: Nesryne El Chad (Lille and Morocco)
  • Men’s Club of the Year: Al Ahly (Egypt)
  • Women’s Club of the Year: Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa)
  • Men’s Interclub Player of the Year: Percy Tau (Al Ahly and South Africa)
  • Women’s Interclub Player of the Year: Fatima Tagnaout (AS FAR and Morocco).

As seen above, Morocco was also a big winner, as the North Africans also carted away four categories including the men’s coach goalkeeper and team of the year to acknowledge their impressive feat in the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
