Gareth Southgate has revealed his future as England manager, the gaffer disclosed that some of Jose Mourinho’s words has come to pass. After seven successful years as England’s manager—during which the team advanced to the finals of Euro 2020 and had noteworthy results in both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups—the manager may retire following Euro 2024.
Looking ahead, Southgate, 53 is getting ready to make the switch to club football. He reveals that Mourinho had assured him that his time with England would prepared him for any task. And that no position in international football would scare him more than his current one with the Three Lions.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Southgate said: “I remember talking to Jose when he was at Man United and he said: ‘You know, when you’ve done the role you’re in now, you’ll be able to do anything.’ Really? I thought that was probably right, but seven years into it, it’s definitely right
Southgate’s previous experience with a clubside Middlesbrough ended bitterly as the team got relegated in 2009. However, despite his failed credential in his past club job, Southgate believes the England job has seasoned him to be a better manager.
He is nonetheless adamant that his time in England has given him all the tools necessary to succeed at a EPL club down the road.
He said: “Everybody would talk about Middlesbrough. ‘Oh, he got Middlesbrough relegated’. Well, yeah, in the third year, we got relegated. But I had three years of Premier League management.”
“There isn’t a job in world football that would intimidate or daunt you, having lived this one (England), frankly. You’re not going to have any higher profile, you’re not going to have any greater pressure, you’re not going to have any more complex issues.”
It looks like Southgate’s dream of moving into the competitive world of club football may come true in the summer of 2024, when managerial vacancies at elite Premier League clubs may become available. But first, he wants to win the Euro 2024 trophy in Germany to cap off his reign with the Three Lions.
