It was a historic night for Girona as they defeated Barcelona 4-2 at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi to move into second place in the La Liga rankings and crown Real Madrid as the champions of the 2023/24 season.

It was Barcelona who first put their best foot forward, as Andreas Christensen put the Catalan giants ahead barely three minutes into the match.

However, Girona swiftly responded through Artem Dovbyk’s header one minute later. Despite Barcelona’s midfield dominance, Girona remained a threat on the counterattack, with Viktor Tsygankov coming particularly close to placing the hosts ahead.

As it turned out, it was Barça who got the lead after a foul on Lamine Yamal inside the box. Robert Lewandowski—last weekend’s hat-trick hero—as is his wont, made no mistake from the spot to give his side the lead a few minutes before the halftime whistle was blown.

In the second half, Girona intensified their offensive efforts, capitalising on defensive errors from Barcelona to put two quick goals past Marc-André ter Stegen.

Girona’s victory not only secured Real Madrid’s La Liga title win for the 2023/24 season (following the Los Blancos’ 3-0 win against Cádiz earlier) but also guaranteed their historic first-ever qualification for the UEFA Champions League.
