Glasgow has secured a rescue deal to host a scaled-down version of the 2026 Commonwealth Games following Victoria, Australia’s withdrawal in July 2023 due to escalating costs.

The deal to host a scaled-down version of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has been made possible by a multimillion-pound commitment from Australian authorities. This includes £100 million from the Victorian government’s compensation package.

Scotland’s Health Secretary Neil Gray hailed Glasgow’s reputation for hosting international events but emphasised limited financial resources and the need to mitigate risk.

Commonwealth Games Scotland chair Ian Reid welcomed the opportunity, citing Glasgow’s ability to deliver the event on time.

Meanwhile, CGF president Chris Jenkins believes this slimmed-down version will pave the way for a more sustainable Games model.

Despite local concerns about infrastructure and cleanliness, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar sees hosting the Games as a “no-brainer” to showcase Glasgow’s leadership.
