Newcastle United remains interested in signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. They hope to acquire him for less than the £60m they bid last summer.
Guehi played a key role for England at Euro 2024, establishing himself as a regular after Harry Maguire’s injury. He also impressed for Palace during the 2023/24 season, helping the Eagles achieve a top-half Premier League finish under manager Oliver Glasner.
Newcastle actively pursued Guehi last summer to strengthen Eddie Howe’s backline, but Palace rejected their bids. The Northern Echo reports that Newcastle will reignite their interest, exploiting Palace’s inability to agree on a new contract with Guehi.
With 18 months left on his deal, Guehi’s transfer value is likely to diminish. Newcastle will push for a move worth less than their £60m offer. Additionally, Palace’s inadequate start to the season may convince chairman Steve Parish that Guehi’s interests are best served elsewhere.
After failing to sign Guehi, Newcastle didn’t sign an alternative. They’ve struggled with injuries, notably Netherlands international Sven Botman’s serious knee problem and former captain Jamaal Lascelles’ absence until February.
Dan Burn has filled in, shifting from left-back to cover. However, manager Howe has limited options. Newcastle has impressed by conceding just 11 goals in 11 Premier League matches.
Guehi remains highly regarded, not only by Newcastle but also other leading Premier League clubs. Palace’s struggles and Guehi’s contract situation might finally convince them to sell.
Newcastle’s defense has been solid, but injuries have exposed their lack of depth. Guehi’s signing would address this issue.
Newcastle is optimistic about signing Guehi, having not signed an alternative last summer. They will likely make another bid soon.
