San Marino has recorded their second win in the history of football and their first since 2004.

The Sammarinese beat Liechtenstein 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League. The win marks their first ever victory in competitive football, after 140 games.

The Sanmarinese got the victory courtesy of Nicko Sensoli’s 53rd-minute hero strike. The 19-year-old midfielder pounced on a defensive error and steered the ball past Benjamin Büchel.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who was not even born when San Marino won their first game, got his first international goal six months after his debut, to make history for his nation.

This is only their second ever win as a footballing nation, with the last coming in April 2004. The last came in their 69th game, a 1-0 win over Liechtenstein in a friendly.

This is also their first competitive win in their 37 years of playing international football.

San Marino is a team ranked 210th, the lowest in football. Prior to their latest victory, they have lost 196 of the 205 fixtures they have contested. The Sanmarinese have also scored 33 goals and conceded 845 goals.

They have slumped to heavy defeats like 13-0 against Germany, 2006, 11-0 against Netherlands, 2011 and 10-0 against England.

However, San Marino’s win means they are also top of the Nations League group they share with Liechtenstein and Gibraltar.
