While acknowledging interest this summer, Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann made it clear that he wants to remain with Los Colchoneros. Griezmann moved permanently from Barcelona this summer after agreeing to a deal in October, which cost €20 million.
He has since enjoyed rising levels of success in Madrid. He has developed a personality of his own, leading the team’s effort in the second half of the season with 15 goals and 16 assists, the most among all La Liga players. Griezmann claimed he just wanted to stay with Atletico and confirmed there was interest in signing him this summer.
Ahead of France’s Euro 2024 qualifying clash against Ireland at the Parc des Princes, France vice-captain Antoine Griezmann said: “There were calls and contacts, I was focused on my club, I’m 15 goals away from the record for the club’s all-time top scorer, it’s as I told my sister: I’m not moving, I’m staying here.”
Griezmann adds that the record is an inspiring factor for him to stay at the club: “I’m going to try and break the record, it’s taken a while to reinstate myself in the eyes of the fans – it isn’t the moment to leave.”
The Frenchman was connected to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr earlier in the summer, and the club reportedly wanted to sign the 32-year-old to team up with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
Griezmann will be entirely focused on breaking Luis Aragones’ league record for most goals scored by Atletico Madrid now that he has officially committed to staying with the Rojiblancos. The Frenchman will play for the French national side against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night in the Euro Qualifiers.
