LA Galaxy have confirmed that Javier Chicharito Hernandez has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. Dejan Joveljic had to take his place after 27 minutes of playing in Thursday’s U.S. Open Cup. They lost to Real Salt Lake though.
MLS confirmed in a club statement released on Friday: “The LA Galaxy today announced that forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during the club’s 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match against Real Salt Lake on June 7. Hernandez will undergo surgery on a date to be determined to begin the rehabilitation process.”
The injury is the latest setback in a disastrous season for Galaxy, who presently sits last in the Eastern Conference with just 12 points after 15 games. Hernandez had recently expressed optimism and high hopes for the team but he now has to watch from the sidelines. Galaxy will be playing their next MLS match against St. Louis without their captain.
