Two of the highest-scoring games in NBA history were put up by Joel Embiid and Karl-Anthony Towns on the 18th anniversary of Kobe Bryant’s 81-point outburst.
Embiid recorded the highest point total in team history against the San Antonio Spurs with a final total of 70 points, 18 rebounds, and 5 assists. Towns outscored the Charlotte Hornets with 62 points and 8 rebounds in the game.
With their combined 60 points on the same day, the two became the fourth and first pairs of players since George Gervin (63 points) and David Thompson (73 points) in 1978. With his 70 points, Embiid broke the previous record for the 76ers single-game scoring record, which had stood since December 1967. This record is now the third-oldest in the history of the team.
Since Wilt Chamberlain in 1963, Embiid is the first player and third overall to have 70 points and 15 rebounds in a game. With 70 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 assists, he is also the only player in NBA history to achieve this feat.
Towns, meanwhile, made NBA history by becoming the seventh player to record multiple career 60-point games. His 62 points set a single-game scoring record for the Timberwolves.
