Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have been signed by Manchester United, strengthening their defence in time for the upcoming campaign. The duo of De Ligt and Mazraoui rejoined their former manager for a combined fee of 60 million euros.
Matthijs joins from Bayern Munich on a five-year deal worth €45m, with an option to extend for another year. The Dutch international will reunite with his former coach, Erik ten Hag, and partner with Lisandro Martinez in central defense.
Mazraoui signs from Bayern Munich on a four-year deal worth €15m, with an option to extend for another year. The Moroccan international will add depth to United’s right-back position.
Both players expressed their excitement about joining United, with De Ligt describing it as an “exciting new challenge” and Mazraoui calling it an “incredible feeling” to wear the red shirt.
Sporting director Dan Ashworth praised the signings, saying De Ligt will add “quality, experience, and leadership” to the squad, while Mazraoui’s “winning mentality” will be a valuable asset.
De Ligt and Mazraoui are both graduates of Ajax’s academy and have won numerous titles in their careers. They will be key additions to Ten Hag’s squad as United seek to improve on last season’s defensive setbacks.
Before joining United, Matthijs bid farewell to Bayern Munich fans on social media, describing his departure as “bittersweet.”
Meanwhile, United’s Luke Shaw will miss the opening game of the season due to a calf injury. The club is also targeting a new central midfielder, with Manuel Ugarte and Youssouf Fofana on their radar.
United opens the Premier League season against Fulham on Friday at Old Trafford.
