Manchester United will return to action in today’s early kick-off when they take on Brighton. They will be looking to make it two wins at the start of their Premier League campaign.

In Fabian Hurzeler’s debut game, the Seagulls easily defeated Everton 3-0 last weekend. Manchester United on the other hand narrowly defeated Fulham at Old Trafford thanks to new signing Zirkzee Joshua. The Netherlands international came off the bench after an hour to replace Mason Mount. The game was deadlocked at 0-0 but he provided the clever finish to seal the win after 87 minutes.

After playing in Euro 2024, Zirkzee is one of those who received an extended summer rest. Erik ten Hag stated prior to kickoff that the forward was still recovering from his injury. Zirkzee will hope that he has done enough to warrant a spot in the starting XI to spearhead United’s attack this coming weekend, given that Rasmus Hojlund is still out.

Hojlund is not the only injured player for United; Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, and Victor Lindelof are also out. Jadon Sancho, who was left off the team against Fulham, might not make it since Juventus is reportedly in talks to sign the winger.

Alejandro Garnacho came off the bench in the Community Shield matches against Manchester City and Fulham this summer. This is after making a belated comeback to training. Against the Cottagers, the Argentina international didn’t appear to be quite up to speed, which might have kept Amad Diallo in the starting lineup.

Noussair Mazraoui is having a great debut on the right. Diogo Dalot is poised to remain at left-back with Shaw still out. Ten Hag later clarified that Harry Maguire’s withdrawal was a precautionary measure. The fact that Harry Maguire hobbled off that evening may allow Matthijs de Ligt to make his entire debut against Brighton. The Netherlands international played the last nine minutes of the match against Fulham after coming off the bench.
