Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, believes that their loss to Liverpool in last season’s Carabao Cup final shows that Liverpool has an edge when it comes to competing for the Premier League title this year. Currently, Chelsea is in second place on the Premier League table as they approach the Christmas season.
Maresca has previously stated that Chelsea is not in contention for the title this year. During his pre-match interview before the game against Fulham on Boxing Day, he shared his thoughts on the title race.
“I think, for sure, the reality is that we are second and we aren’t just second after four or five games, when probably the table is still not the real one,” Maresca said.
He added that Liverpool has been performing exceptionally well since the start of the season. “But for sure, Liverpool are doing fantastic since the first day. It’s a squad that has already lived that kind of moment, winning a trophy, which is important.”
He recalled that during the Carabao Cup final last year, he noticed a significant difference in experience between the Liverpool and Chelsea players. “In one of my press conferences, I said that last year, when Liverpool faced Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, I saw the amount of finals Liverpool players had played and the Chelsea ones, and it was a huge difference.”
This experience is crucial for players in high-pressure situations, according to Maresca. “This showed the experience you need to read this kind of moment, to raise, and to get more close, but we are happy to be where we are at this moment.”
