Former Manchester United star Anthony Martial has been offered a record-breaking contract to join Greek powerhouse AEK Athens. Despite previous rumors of a move to Saudi Arabia, Martial is still without a club after leaving Manchester United.

However, he has been offered a lucrative deal to stay in Europe. After his contract expired in the summer, Martial departed the Red Devils after nine years. He has been connected to several transactions, including rich agreements in Saudi Arabia and the US.

It seems that the £44 million player has an other choice: the Greek Super League. For the upcoming season, capital club AEK Athens is reportedly interested in signing Martial. They are willing to spend a lot of money to make it happen.

The striker earned £250,000 a week when he was a member of United before. But the wage that would be offered in Greece is large even though it has not been made clear. AEK would be willing to pay Martial the largest salary in the team’s history, according to Sport24.

Erik Lamela, a former Tottenham player, is presently the highest paid member of the team. However, Martial’s planned salary looks to completely outpace his pay. Additionally, the pair would have a difficult reunion following the controversial 2020 incident in which the Frenchman was sent off for punching Lamela during Spurs’ 6-1 victory at Old Trafford.

AEK’s director Panagiotis Kone has been in London over the past few days for talks with Chelsea regarding David Datro Fofana. Lille were also rumoured to be interested in the latter but have ruled out a move.

Speaking to DAZN, Lille president Olivier Letang said: “Contacts with Martial? No. Absolutely none. I’m not in the habit of stockpiling players. We have Jonathan David, Mohamed Bayo, and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. That’s already three solutions for one position.”

After arriving from Monaco, Martial, 28, made 317 appearances for United in his eight years at Old Trafford. He wouldn’t be the first former Premier League player to be drawn to Greece this summer if he were to finalize a move to Athens.

Willian, the former winger for Chelsea and Arsenal, also took a similar action when he left Fulham to sign for Olympiacos on a free transfer. According to reports, the Brazilian signed a one-year contract paying almost £100,000 per week. The 36-year-old Willian already declined a new deal at Craven Cottage.
