Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has expressed reservations about the potential dismissal of Stefano Pioli at the conclusion of the season, particularly if he leads the team to the Europa League final.
Although Pioli’s current contract with Milan isn’t set to expire until June 2025, there are rumours circulating in Italy suggesting that the club is exploring alternative options, such as Thiago Motta of Bologna and Antonio Conte.
Costacurta, while acknowledging that he is not involved in the club’s decision-making process, believes that if Pioli guides Milan to the Europa League Final, it might not be wise to part ways with him just yet.
I no longer go to Milan’s offices, but if they reach the Europa League Final, sacking Pioli may not be the right decision. I hear that he’s gone already, but I’d wait before saying so,” the Milan legend told Sky Sport as quoted by IlMilanista.
“I am really attracted by the new attitude Pioli is trying to have. He is trying to give Milan something they didn’t have in the past and this motivates the players. We should never underestimate the desire for motivation that certain footballers and teams have.
“I think Pioli has understood Milan needs new challenges; it’s a growing phase where they still lack balance, so they tend to concede a lot.”
Milan will up against Slavia Praha in the Europa League Round of 16-second leg today after beating the Czech side 4-2 at San Siro last week.
