The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has renewed faith in head coach Walid Regragui, despite the country’s disappointing performance at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The North African country whom Six Sports tipped to go far in the competition were eliminated in their round of 16 clash against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, courtesy of goals from Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena.
Despite the early ouster, the FRMF, after several evaluation meetings has concluded that it’s in the best interest of the country to retain Regragui, in a statement released today, 5th February 2024.
The Statement reads: “The president of the Royal Moroccan Football League, Mr Fouzi Lekjaa, stressed the need to continue working and making every effort to give the national team and football the status it deserves in order to delight the Moroccan fans in the upcoming competitions, especially the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and the preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations finals that our country will host in the summer of next year.
“On this occasion, the Royal Moroccan Football Association renews its confidence in Mr Walid Regragui to lead the next phase, giving him all the support and assistance to achieve the status that national football in general and the national team in particular deserves.”
Back in September 2022, Regragui was appointed as Morocco’s head coach on a four-year deal, replacing Vahid Halilhodzic.
The 48-year-old guided the Atlas Lions to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup Semi-finals, where they made history as the first African country to reach that stage, defeating the likes of Spain and Portugal.
