Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been handed a four-match suspension and fined £35,000, following the fallout from Monday’s goalless draw against rivals Galatasaray.
Mourinho was accused off making racist statements in his post-match comments, after stating that Galatasaray bench were “jumping like monkeys”.
The Portuguese also said the fixture was better for being refereed by Slovenian Slavko Vincic rather than Turkish officials.
After the post-match statement, Galatasaray claimed he had made derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people, thereby initiating criminal proceedings.
However, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) then released decisions taken by its Professional Football Disciplinary Board, imposing sanctions on the Fenerbahce boss for two separate disciplinary matters.
The TFF said the former Real Madrid coach accused Turkish football of chaos and disorder with insulting and offensive statements towards both the Turkish football community and all Turkish referees.
“It was determined that the statements used towards the members of the opposing team, were not mandatory. They were contrary to the ethics of sports and the concept of fair play, contained expressions that could encourage violence and disorder in sports. They were divisive and separatist in society and could cause fan incidents, and therefore, it was deemed an act against sportsmanship”, the Federation stressed.
Therefore, a fine of £32,655 was imposed on the Portuguese, alongside another four-match ban.
Meanwhile, Fenerbahce had issued their own statement on Tuesday, saying Mourinho’s comments after the match were “taken completely out of context and deliberately distorted”, and could “in no way be associated with racism”.
Former Chelsea and Galatasaray striker, Didier Drogba had also come to the defence of his old boss .
Drogba, who worked under Mourinho in Chelsea, stated that the 62-year-old can’t be a racist. He also stressed that the Portuguese coach had been a father figure for him during his career.
Jose is known to have good relationship with African players and has a record of signing Africans, among top managers.
His days at Inter Milan, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and AS Roma saw him used Africans and Asians.
However, following the sanctions, Mourinho will not be in the dugout for Fenerbahce’s upcoming league games. He will miss the games against Antalyaspor, Samsunspor, Bodrum and Trabzonspor.
