Novak Djokovic began a record-extending 400th week as World No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Ranking on Monday after a record seventh Nitto ATP Finals triumph in Turin the previous day.

Djokovic who won his maiden year-end honour more than 12 years didn’t even need to win the title at the ATP Finals to stay No. 1, he just needed to win one match, which he got by defeating Holger Rune in his opening round-robin contest.

In doing so, the 36-year-old Serb extends his all-time record at the top of ATP Rankings, and also leading in the all-time at World No.1 for both the men and women by a tennis player by 23 weeks ahead of second place women’s player Stefanie Graf (a record he broke in February) and 90 weeks for the men’s Roger Federer.

“It’s huge. It means a lot, obviously,” Djokovic said of the milestone after his round-robin win over Rune. “I knew coming into the tournament here I needed only one win to clinch the year-end No. 1. I really wanted that to happen already tonight—I didn’t want to prolong in a way the situation, and complicate in a way this particular goal. I’m really glad that I managed to do that tonight.”

Djokovic’s victory in the ATP Finals also increases his lead over Carlos Alcaraz, ranked second, to 2,390 points (11,245 to 8,855). The difference before the event was 1,490 points (9,945 to 8,455).

Djokovic celebrated his 400th week at the top in style on Sunday in Turin, where he won the seventh season finale title in history. Djokovic captured the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by Pepperstone for a record eighth time during the Nitto ATP Finals.

2024 will bring Djokovic a lot more achievements. To reach 100 career titles, he needs just two more trophies. His 1,086 wins will probably make him only the third person in history (after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer) to surpass 1,100 match wins. And he will try to add to his impressive record of 40 ATP Masters 1000 titles and 24 Grand Slams, which includes 10 Australian Opens.
