Darwin Nunez claims he did not understand any of Nottingham Forest fans’ nasty words about him, but he was overjoyed to score the winner against them. Nunez scored a 99th-minute winner for Liverpool against Forest at the City Ground in March.

Before that, the Uruguayan was called a “sh*t Andy Carroll” – a reference to the former England striker who toiled at Anfield from 2011 to 2013. Several months after the event, the 24-year-old has broken his silence on the taunting, saying that manager Jurgen Klopp gave him a pep talk.

He told ESPN Uruguay: “In that game, the Forest fans were singing to me but I didn’t understand anything. Thank goodness I ended up scoring the [winning] goal.”

The forward added: “Then the coach [Klopp] in the locker room said ‘screw them’.”

Nunez joined Liverpool for a club record £85 million ($108 million) in 2022, but he may not have lived up to the high price. The former Benfica star has 33 goals and 17 assists in 96 appearances. But with manager Klopp departing and forward Mohamed Salah linked with a summer exit, the Uruguayan will face increased pressure to perform at Anfield.

Following the conclusion of another Premier League season, when Liverpool finished third and won the Carabao Cup, Nunez will most likely represent Uruguay in their friendly matches against Costa Rica and Mexico on May 31 and June 5, respectively.
