Official: Girona seals European place finish after 4-1 win over Cádiz 

Girona made history by clinching European qualification for the first time in their 93-year history, after a convincing 4-1 victory over relegation-threatened Cádiz on Saturday.

Girona’s dominance was witnessed early on in the match, with Eric García opening the scoring nine minutes in with a header at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.

Despite missed opportunities from both sides, the Blanquivermells continued to assert their superiority and subsequently got a deserved second goal through Iván Martín in the 22d minute.

Although Cádiz showed signs of resurgence after the break, Artem Dovbyk extended Girona’s lead with a well-taken goal in the 71st minute to make it 3-0 in favour of the hosts.

The visitors managed to pull one back through Gonzalo Escalante in the 81st minute, but Girona quickly restored their three-goal advantage with Portu’s composed finish.

This emphatic win confirmed Girona’s place in European competition for the first time, while Cádiz faces an uphill battle to avoid relegation, with only six matches remaining in the season.
