Nigeria’s women’s basketball team made history by reaching the Olympic quarterfinals for the first time, defeating Canada 79-70 on August 4, 2024. This milestone follows their impressive 75-62 win over Australia in their group play opener on July 29, marking their first Olympic victory since 2004. Ezinne Kalu led Nigeria’s scoring with 21 points, while Shay Colley scored 17 points for Canada.

The game was closely contested in the first half, with Canada leading by four points at halftime. However, Nigeria dominated the second half, applying intense pressure that Canada couldn’t withstand. The D’Tigress outscored Canada 23-5 in the third quarter, including a decisive 15-0 run that gave them an eight-point lead. By the midpoint of the fourth quarter, Nigeria’s lead had grown to a commanding 17 points, securing their victory and eliminating Canada from contention.

Nigeria’s defense was the key to their win, holding Canada to 37% shooting overall and forcing 26 turnovers, which led to 27 points. The D’Tigress also excelled in free throw shooting, making 14 of 17 attempts, unlike Canada’s struggles (15/22). Nigeria’s defensive excellence has been consistent, forcing 69 turnovers and 40 steals across three group games, including standout performances against Australia and France.

With their historic win, the D’Tigress will now await their quarterfinal opponents, marking a milestone for African basketball.
