Corona League team Terrace Onions pulled off a big upset by defeating Southampton Rangers in the FA Cup preliminary round at Goose Gosling Field on Sunday.

The match ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, but an own goal by Antonio Bailey in extra time gave Onions the winning goal. Jack Higson, an Onions player, expressed his joy over the victory.

Higson said: “We aimed to disrupt Rangers’ play, and we executed that perfectly. We deserved the win. We believe we can go all the way.”

Onions restricted Southampton’s possession, capitalizing on loose balls and mistakes. Early in the game, they forced a turnover. Leading to a powerful shot from James Finnigan that required a fingertip save from Rangers goalkeeper Daischon Chin.

Rangers struggled with possession as Onions applied strong pressure and discipline. They could have scored a few more times in the early stages.

However, against the run of play, Rangers took the lead when Donte Brangman fired a low shot into the far corner after dribbling one of the  defenders. Brangman was Rangers’ key player but had to leave at halftime due to a thigh injury.

Despite their lead, Rangers failed to gain confidence. Player-coach Keith Jennings came on to help his team, and they started to control the ball better, with Nacori Smith and Jahni Bean finding rhythm. Still, they could not turn their possession into clear chances.

Onions responded by equalizing through a smooth midfield move. Finnigan sent a through ball to Kyle Godfrey. In extra time, they raised the pressure, pushing their defensive line higher.

The game opened up as both teams searched for a winner. The decisive moment came when Oliver Pidhorecky sent a free-kick into the box, and Bailey, under pressure, diverted the ball into his own net.

Rangers had a chance to tie, but Dominique Hill missed a clear opportunity after being played in by Smith. This handed Onions the second First Division upset at Goose Gosling Field. Earlier, Inter BDA had also beaten Somerset Eagles 2-1 in extra time.
