It isn’t news that Manchester City are in its most devastating state at the moment. Although they are likely to grab a Champions League ticket, Pep and his boys are in for a trophyless season after winning a treble last year. From being a hero to zero is a colossal epidemic facing the club.
The current number of defeats recorded by City this season is the highest Pep has accrued since he joined the Etihad in his last five years. They have lost eight games so far this season, including the current one to Liverpool; the highest number of defeats recorded by Pep since he joined Manchester City. Before, it used to be the 20/21 season where he lost six games, and right now, it isn’t certain that City won’t lose a game in the EPL. Even his debut season in 2016 wasn’t as poor as the Spanish gaffer is experiencing at the moment.
What’s going wrong in Pep’s tactics and style of play? What must not be said is that Pep is out of ideas; he still owns his onions, but the real issue is how many clubs have caught up fast with the patterns he uses to play. It shows how the EPL doesn’t give room for the monopoly of trophies.
Obviously, it will take another decade of sloppiness from other teams for a club like City to win the EPL title for four consecutive times.
“We played very good. Maybe we missed more productivity in the shots but we played against a fantastic team.
“Second half they defended very deep. We have done something we have not tried for many games, which was we brought them to their box and tried to beat them there.
“The tactic was to arrive in the final third and the byline, and it happened a lot but we did not score. We missed the next bit a little bit and with crosses, it is almost impossible to do it because of their size. We just could not find the next step.”
Those were the words of Pep after their latest defeat to Liverpool at the Etihad and second in a week across all competition. Pep for the first time being manager, has conceded multiple goals on two separate occasions which birth questions about the technicality of his players. Although Pep never spoke about the lagging defense as he focused on the club’s inability to score goals. Certainly, the gaffer knows the club have faced more problems in the backline than their attacks. They recently conceded three goals last Wednesday to Madrid and six in total to the UCL defending champions.
Every defeats, Pep has always assured fans that the team will get back strongly to the extend that they went to the transfer market to purchase some legs; something Pep hardly does since he got to City.
Will Pep Guardiola see this through? This is a question the gaffer and all City fans may not be able to answer, but one thing that’s certain is that the Citizens will never forget this vulnerable and precarious season in a long time. A season where they were stripped of all their glory, hour and magical excellence.
