Following Christopher Nkunku’s injury scare in Chelsea’s preseason friendly against Borrusia Dortmund yesterday in Chicago, the club’s gaffer Mauricio Pochettino is optimistic the forward’s injury isn’t critical.

Nkunku was forced off in the 22nd minute of the 1-1 draw with the German side yesterday and faces a fight to be fit for the start of the Premier League season.

Speaking post-match about Nkunku, Poch said: “The doctors are checking him and I hope it is not a big issue. He fell in the action which was maybe a penalty and he feels something in his knee but we hope it is nothing big.

“We hope he can be back quickly with the team. We need a few days to assess him.

“We took some risks because the pitch is not perfect because the facilities are used for a different sport. We won’t blame the pitch for the injury though. For me, it was bad luck,” he concluded.

Chelsea’s first match on the opening weekend of the English Premier League will be at home against Liverpool, and they’ll hoping Nkunku who has been sharp and productive during the preseason preparations will be fit for action.
