Tottenham Hotspur secured their first win against Liverpool in their last 12 meetings courtesy of a 2-1 home victory at the Tottenham Stadium on Saturday evening.

Spurs whose last win against Liverpool was in October 2017 looked like a side ready to extend the win drought in the initial minutes of the game, with both Cody Gakpo and Andy Robertson’s efforts fantastically saved by Guglielmo Vicario.

The Reds however suffered a setback in the 26th minute when Curtis Jones who was initially shown a yellow card for a challenge on Yves Bissouma was given his matching orders after a VAR review.

Eight minutes later, Jurgen Klopp’s men seemed to have gotten themselves a lifeline through Luiz Daiz’s goal, only for the assistant referee to raise his flag for offside, before Spurs found the opener 2 minutes after, via captain Son Heung-Min who converted from James Maddison’s perfect pass to Richarlison.

Undeterred by the setbacks, Liverpool found their leveller a few minutes to the end of the first half, through Cody Gakpo who calmly smashed home Virgil van Dijk’s free kick.

Second Half

If there was any doubt about Ange Postecoglou’s prediction of the game being a great test in the first half, the second half proved to be more intense.

Both sides launched at each other equally in search of the winner, before Diogo Jota was sent off in the 69th minute, having received two yellow cards in the game.

With nine men, Liverpool were forced to regroup in a 5-3-0 formation to defend valiantly against the attacks of Postecoglou’s men.

Nonetheless, Liverpool’s contingency plan blew into their face cruelly in the dying minutes when Joe Matip scored a beautiful own goal that shot Spurs one point behind league toppers Manchester City who surprisingly lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier.
