The biggest game in the Premier League opening weekend ended in a 1-1 draw, as Chelsea came from a goal down to wrestle a point from Liverpool to seal the seventh consecutive draw against the Merseyside club.
After a shambolic previous season from both sides, Liverpool started this encounter on the brighter side and got the first goal through a lovely combination between Mohammed Salah and Luiz Daiz in the 18th minute.
A few minutes after the Egyptian king rattled the crossbar, he sent a delightful pass into Diaz’s path, and the Colombian expertly directed his effort past Robert Sánchez, who’s donning the Blues’ jersey competitively for the first time.
11 minutes later, Salah found the back of the net, but the goal was cancelled due to his offside positioning.
The home team then began attacks of their own and drew themselves level in the 37th minute through debutant Axel Disasi who converted Ben Chilwell’s header. About 2 minutes later, Chilwell thought he’d doubled the lead after rounding Alison Becker to send the ball into an open net, but his effort was also cancelled due to an offside.
Although the second half didn’t witness any goal, Liverpool will have Alison to thank, as the Brazilian number 1 saved both Chilwell and Nicolas Jackson’s strikes to ensure that Mauricio Pochettino’s first game in charge of Chelsea wouldn’t result into a win.
