According to multiple sources, Maurizio Sarri has resigned as Lazio’s manager with immediate effect, after notifying the club’s management on Tuesday.

Sarri’s decision comes after Lazio suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to relegation-threatened Udinese on Monday evening, which consequently led to fans booing the players at the Stadio Olimpico.

The defeat was the Biancocelesti’s 12th league loss of the season after they were kicked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich last week. The Italian club suffered a 3-0 loss at Germany—rendering their 1-0 home win useless, at the conclusion of the two-legged round of 16 fixture.

After the Udinese disappointment, Sarri reportedly had a tense meeting with the players, during which he sought to understand the reasons behind the team’s decline, whilst also questioning his expertise in the dugout.

No player voiced support for him to stay or urged him to depart. This lack of backing led Sarri to submit his resignation to the club’s management.

As of the time of this report, the club hasn’t released any official statement on Sarri’s departure.

Lazio still have hopes pinned on the Coppa Italia, with a semi-final clash against Juventus looming on the horizon.
