Cristiano Ronaldo scored a late winner as Portugal came from a goal behind to defeat Scotland 2-1.

The 39-year-old, who came on as a substitute  broke the Scottish’s hearts in the 88th minute after sliding home Nuno Mendes’ cross to complete a fightback.

Scotland were given hope of a first win against Portugal since 1980 as they got an early lead. Scott McTominay’s bullet header in the seventh minute gave Scotland the lead.

However, the home side fought back, dominating possession and applying much attacking pressure on Scotland. They eventually got the equaliser in the second half, courtesy of Bruno Fernandes long range shot. The Manchester United captain shot from 20 yards, which snuck through goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Portugal continued the dominance, searching for a winner. Joao Felix was denied by Gunn while Ronaldo struck the post twice.

The Portuguese later got the winner in the 88th minute as Ronaldo made no mistake steering home Mendes’ cross.

Scotland are winless in both games, losing to Poland in the opening game. Steve Clarke’s side lost both games, conceding late goals.

Meanwhile, Roberto Martinez side lead Group A1 with six points following two wins in two games.

Ronaldo kickstarts his journey to 1000 career goals after scoring his 901th goal.
