Sadio Mane anticipates a difficult AFCON showdown in Cote d’Ivoire

Senegal’s captain Sadio Mane, has predicted the 2023 African Cup of Nations to be a difficult tournament, compared to the past editions.

The Al-Nassr forward revealed his view during a discussion with CAFOnline about his country’s chances in the competition, having been pitted against Cameroon, Guinea and The Gambia in Group C.

“We know it won’t be easy but we will be there to do our best and try to go through every round,” Mane said.

“We are expecting a tough competition. This competition will be one of the strongest since I started playing in it because all the big countries are here and they all have their targets, but we will see what will happen.”

Sadio Mane guided the Terenga Lions to their maiden AFCON trophy back in 2022, after beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw at the Olembe Stadium, Yaounde back in 2022.

Now presented with the opportunity of repeating the feat in succession, the ex-Liverpool star said it will be a special achievement for him, as the AFCON trophy stands out as one of the highlights in his illustrious career.

“Winning the AFCON was the best trophy I have ever won in my life and coming to do it again will be special and a big achievement. It’s been a dream to play in this competition since I was a kid and we will do our best. Winning the AFCON will have a big impact on our football because we have won all the other categories which is great for the country,” the 31-year-old concluded.

Senegal will begin their campaign on January 15 against Gambia, before they clash against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon three days later.
