Jannik Sinner proved too strong for Taylor Fritz on Sunday to become the first Italian player to win the US Open men’s singles title.

The 23-year-old Italian and World No.1 delivered a typically high-quality display to earn a 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 triumph against Taylor Fritz in New York after a buoyant atmosphere greeted the two players inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, despite Fritz being the first American men’s singles finalist since 2006.

“This title means so much for me. The last period of my career was really not easy. I have My team supports me every day. The people who are close to me. I love tennis. I practice a lot for these kind of stages,” Jannik Sinner after becoming the first Italian man in history to win the US Open.

“I did pretty well I guess?”, Jannik Sinner after winning his first US Open title we just went day by day.

“Trying to practice well in the days off. Believing in ourself which is more important. I understood how important the mental part is in this sport. I’m very happy and proud to share this with my team. I know there are a lot of people watching from home. But I’d like to thank everyone for being so fair in this amazing arena. It was a huge pleasure,” he concluded while on court interview.

With his two-hour, 16-minute win, Sinner became just the fourth man to win the Australian Open and US Open on hard courts in the same season, after Mats Wilander, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
