Frank Vogel’s time as the Phoenix Suns’ coach is over following a dismal season that concluded without a postseason victory.

Less than two weeks after the Minnesota Timberwolves easily eliminated the team from the NBA playoffs in the first round, the 50-year-old Vogel was let go by the team on Thursday. Vogel was given the task of managing the Suns’ All-Star trio of Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, and Kevin Durant when he was hired with great fanfare last summer. Although they had their moments, the trio never really managed to click.

Beal missed a significant portion of the season due to injury. The Suns had a small bench and turnovers even after he returned. Prior to Game 4 versus the Wolves, Vogel declared that he “got the full support of (owner) Mat Ishbia” and that he anticipated returning for a second season.

In his one and a half years as the team’s manager, Ishbia hasn’t been afraid to make significant changes. At the previous season’s trade deadline, he made a trade for Durant, completely ruining a team that had advanced to the 2021 Finals. In a major transaction last summer, he also acquired Beal and ousted coach Monty Williams.

After three seasons, the team will now be searching for its third head coach.

With the squad subject to the league’s pay cap, Jones won’t have much leeway unless significant adjustments are made. In addition to Grayson Allen’s recent $70 million, four-year agreement, Durant, Booker, and Beal also command high salaries.

With their 49-33 regular season record, the Suns secured the sixth seed and just missed out on the play-in round.

With the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, Vogel took home a title. Over 12 seasons with the Pacers, Lakers, and Suns, he had a 480-422 record.
