Super Eagles’ duo, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, has assured Nigerians that the national team will put a good fight and get all maximum points in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Nigeria in their last games under Finidi George, drew South Africa and lost to Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers.
Meanwhile, they will play Rwanda and Benin again for the AFCON qualifiers next month and will hope to turn the result around, to qualify.
Iwobi emphasised the importance of securing the necessary point, noting that there is still much to fight for while urging his teammates to rise to the occasion to qualify for the AFCON tournament.
“Of course, there is still a lot to fight for. We have a lot to prove,” Iwobi said in an interview with the Super Eagles media team.
“I always say we have a lot of quality in the team but hopefully we can kick on and get the points we need to qualify because it is something that we all want to achieve as a nation, we have the players to do so, we just need to believe and make things happen.”
The Fulham midfielder star acknowledged the loss of faith and pressure from fans but noted that the players hold themselves to the same high standards.
“Of course, the same way fans and everyone demands from us, we the players, we demand from ourselves as well because we know the quality we have, and we know how we do well for our club sides. We just have to bring that form on a consistent basis for Nigeria”, he said.
Nigerian midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, also acknowledged the disappointing form of the Super Eagles, which led to their draw and loss against South Africa and Benin respectively. He stated that the team will give their all to claim all points.
“To be honest, it’s not where we wanted to be or the position we want to be. It was a difficult game. I think we just need to be good and try to correct some mistakes and also try to go all in for those games and we will definitely try as much as possible to get there”, he said,
The Leicester man also welcomed the inclusion of young players in the squad and expressed hope that they would integrate quickly.
The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic on September 7 at Uyo, then play Rwanda in Kigali on September 10, as they aim to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON.
