The Super Falcons of Nigeria claimed their first victory at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, courtesy of a hard-fought 3-2 win over co-host nation Australia.
The Falcons who were coming from a goalless draw against Canada in their opening match took a lot of time before settling in today’s match, and paid the price by having to earn the win from a goal down.
Australia controlled much of the opening minutes proceeding, and it’s no surprise they got the game’s opener in the added minutes of the first half when Caitlin Foord set up Van Egmond, allowing her to tuck a fine finish past Chiamaka Nnadozie.
The Falcons however will not accept a half-time defeat, as they managed to fashion an equalizer six minutes into the added time.
Rasheedat Ajibade’s shot caused chaos in the Australian area and the ball fell into the path of Uchenna Kanu, who volleyed home from close range.
The game entered the break on level, but Nigeria took the lead 20 minutes into the second half when Osinachi Ohale poached a header following a defensive mishap to shock the co-hosts.
In no time, they got their third through substitute Asisat Oshoala, following a defensive mix-up from Australia and in the process, the Barcelona striker ensured the safety of the points.
Alanna Kennedy rose high to pull one back for the Matildas, but the Super Falcons held on despite 11 minutes of added time for their first win of the tourney.
Nigeria now leads Group B via goal difference and will be hoping to do enough to maintain a top-place finish in the group when they face already-eliminated Republic of Ireland next Monday.
