Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal finally secured their first Premier League win over Manchester City for the first time since December 2015 courtesy of Gabriel Martinelli’s late strike at the Emirates Stadium.

Gunners who were without injured Bukayo Saka started the encounter on a back foot, with Josko Gvardiol seeing an effort cleared off the line by Declan Rice, before Davis Raya’s mistake almost resulted in a Julian Alvarez’s goal.

City continued charging in their usual wont, but the home team held their own and got hard done by when Mateo Kovacic’s harsh tackles on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice attracted a yellow card instead of the clamoured matching order.

Nonetheless, Arsenal came into the second more energetic, with Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus both spearheading the attack decently, before both managers opted for triple changes when it appeared the game was headed for a goalless draw.

The substitution went Arsenal’s way late on in the 86th minute, as Kai Havertz set up Martinelli whose shot deflected off Nathan Ake to settle into the net and condemn City to their first PL back-to-back loss since December 2018, while the Gunners levelled up with rivals Tottenham Hotspur on 20 points atop the league.
