Chelsea had tried interfere with Tottenham Hotspur’s acquisition of Bayern Munich star Mathys Tel on transfer deadline day. Tottenham announced they secured Tel on loan in the late hours of the deadline.
Initially, Tel had turned down their offer but eventually agreed to a loan deal with an option to buy for €55 million (£45.7m/$56.9m). Before joining Tottenham, several top English clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal, expressed interest in him.
Manchester United negotiated with Bayern but pulled out after hearing about a £5m loan fee. Chelsea made a late attempt to steal the deal while Tel was preparing to fly to Spurs.
Despite Chelsea’s efforts, Tel had already made up his mind after discussions with Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou. The 19-year-old French talent revealed that Harry Kane, his former Bayern teammate and Tottenham legend, played a significant role in his decision.
Now that he has joined Postecoglou’s squad, many are eager to see if he will debut for Tottenham in their upcoming match against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final. This situation reminds fans of when Chelsea signed Brazilian winger Willian in similar circumstances in 2013, catching Spurs off guard.
