Sandro Tonali’s agent Guiseppe Riso has confirmed that the star is battling a gambling addiction amid the shock betting allegations leveled against the Italian footballer.
Tonali who joined Newcastle United from AC Milan last summer was officially placed under investigation alongside his Italian teammate Nicolo Zaniolo, and both players were questioned by police while on international duty before eventually pulling out of the squad as the investigation tarried.
“The Federation announces that, in the late afternoon of today, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Turin has notified investigative acts to footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, currently meeting with the national team at the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano,” the Italian Federation statement reads.
“Regardless of the nature of the acts, considering that in this situation the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the commitments scheduled in the coming days, the Federation has decided, also to protect them, to allow them to return to their respective clubs.”
Now, Giuseppe Riso, the agent of Tonali, has stated in advance of Newcastle’s upcoming match against Crystal Palace this Saturday that his client is actively seeking assistance, whilst expressing his desire and hope that the controversy will serve as a means to rescue his client from the addiction.
He said: “He is in shock, he is shaken and sad. I hope that this experience saves his life and that of many others, that it helps those who fall into the same habit as him
He then added: “Sandro is training, and on Saturday he could also play.
“He understood that he has to face this problem in a determined way. The club is absolutely at the moment on his side.”
