The January 2024 transfer window runs until 11pm on Thursday night. For millions of football fans, the nearly limitless possibilities created during the 2023–2024 Premier League summer transfer window surpass the disappointing reality of the regular season. Only a few EPL teams have a genuine chance of winning trophies, and even fewer take home any awards.

While some clubs have been busy shipping-off players, others have been rebuilding ahead of the second stanza of the season.

Manchester United have been very busy in the outgoing loan market in January. They sent Jadon Sancho back to Borussia Dortmund until the end of the season, while Donny van de Beek has been loaned to Eintracht Frankfurt, Hannibal has joined Sevilla for the same time period, and Alvaro Fernandez has been sent to Benfica. They also ended their loan of Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham six months early, with the Spaniard subsequently joining Brentford on loan.

Man City’s first move of the window saw them sell Nahuel Ferraresi to Sao Paulo. They also sold Zack Steffen to Colorado Rapids and loaned Lewis Fiorini to Charlton Athletic. Their big outgoing player was Kalvin Phillips, who left on loan to West Ham, who themselves shipped Thilo Kehrer to Monaco. Argentine wonderkid Claudio Echeverri was signed by Man City from River Plate but will only join in January 2025. Let’s look at some of the top players signed in 2024 January Transfer window.

1. Vitor Roque (Sporto Paranaense to Barcelona): £25.6 million plus £26.4 million in add-ons. The eighteen-year-old, known as Roque Junior, was signed by Barcelona in July to a seven-year deal that included a €500 million release clause. There has been some economic pressure to bring in the Brazilian striker ahead of schedule due to their struggling season.

2) Sacha Boey (Galatasaray to Bayern Munich): £25.6 million plus £4.3 million in add-ons. Although Bayern Munich, who are struggling in the Bundesliga, have been hanging on to a mid-season acquisition, Kieran Trippier, for dear life. Crystal Palace have been snooping around for some time.

3. Radu Dragusin (Genoa -> Tottenham Hotspur): £21.5 million plus additional £4.3 million. Ange Postecoglou has got his top defensive target after a pretty enjoyable early-window transfer saga. Following Timo Werner, Dragusin’s arrival adds to a strong start to January for the Premier League side and his comedy agent is just one of five reasons why we love this transfer.

4. Lucas Beraldo: £17.4 million (from São Paulo to Paris Saint-Germain). Luis Enrique has done a good job managing the project’s transition from an obsession with international superstars to a focus on developing young talent thus far. Center-half Beraldo is the next piece in a puzzle they still fervently hope Kylian Mbappe can eventually assist solve.

5. Claudio Echeverri: £12.5 million + add-ons (River Plate to Manchester City) Echeverri won’t play for City until January 2024, despite signing in January 2023. Taking a look at Julian Alvarez is a wise decision.

6. Arthur Vermeeren – £15.3 million plus £4.3 million add-ons (from Royal Antwerp to Atletico Madrid). Although other elite teams would be working under Diego Simeone in Spain.

7. Timo Werner returns to the EPL: After a two-year unproductive spell with London Giants Chelsea that saw him returned to RB Leipzig, Werner is back to the EPL but to the Blues rivals Tottenham for a six-month loan.

Werner’s experience with the Blues within 2020-2022 were boring moments where he scored 10 goals in 56 games but hopefully, things turnaround for the German at the New Tottenham Stadium.
