Tottenham Hotspur faced AFC Bournemouth in an exciting match that ended in a 2-2 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The team trailed at halftime after Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier scored just before the break.
The situation worsened when Evanilson scored again for Bournemouth, putting Spurs in a tough spot. However, they quickly responded with a goal from Pape Matar Sarr, making the score 2-1. The comeback was completed in the 84th minute when Heung-Min Son scored from the penalty spot. This marked the first-ever home draw with Bournemouth.
On the injury front, there was good news as defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven made their returns to the pitch. Romero had been out for a long time and played his first game since early December. He showed some rustiness when he lost the ball to Evanilson. Evanilson almost scored but was denied by a great save from goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Vicario also had to make another impressive save with his legs to stop Justin Kluivert early in the game.
The match started with an open and lively pace. Both teams created opportunities. Spurs nearly took the lead when Dominic Solanke’s header was cleared off the line by James Hill. However, chances became scarce until the 42nd minute when Bournemouth took the lead. While attempting a counter-attack, Spurs lost possession. This allowed Milos Kerkez to intercept and run down the flank. He delivered a cross that found Tavernier, who scored from close range.
Following the halftime break, Tottenham made two substitutions, bringing on Son and Lucas Bergvall. They had a scare early in the second half when Kluivert scored for Bournemouth, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside. At the other end, Son almost equalized with a curling shot that hit the outside of the post. It was Spurs’ best chance of the match up to that point.
Cristian Romero’s return to the pitch lasted just over an hour before he was replaced by Micky van de Ven, who was also making his first appearance since January 30. James Maddison came on for Rodrigo Bentancur, and the team quickly generated a chance. Maddison set up Pape Matar Sarr, but Sarr shot wide from 18 yards, missing an opportunity to score.
With seven minutes left, Spurs equalized from the penalty spot after a brilliant team move. Van de Ven passed to Son, who sent the ball to Djed Spence, then Maddison played a perfect pass back to Son. As Son charged towards the goal, he was fouled by Kepa for a penalty. He took the penalty and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.
The match ended with both teams pushing for a win, but neither could find a clear chance, leaving Spurs with a point as they prepared for an important Europa League match against AZ Alkmaar.
