Substitutes Rodrigo Muniz and Ryan Sessegnon helped Fulham win 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League today. This victory brought Fulham closer to their rivals for European football.
Fulham played better in the first half but failed to score. Timothy Castagne missed a clear chance by sending a weak shot straight at goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Spurs on the other hand made seven changes from their previous Europa League game and defended well. But they struggled to create chances.
Ange Postecoglou made a double substitution at halftime, bringing on Son Heung-Min and Lucas Bergvall. This change improved Spurs in the second half. Dominic Solanke missed two chances, including one from close range after James Maddison set it up.
Shortly after, Bergvall asked for a penalty after a challenge by Calvin Bassey. However, the appeal was denied. Postecoglou commented, “I’ll leave that to the officiating. I will say, though, that we don’t carry on like a lot of other clubs and I think that hurts us for sure.”
Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon, who moved to Spurs in 2019 and returned last July, scored the second goal in the 88th minute. He pushed past Ben Davies and hit an unbeatable shot into the top corner with his weaker right foot, prompting happy chants of “he’s one of our own.”
Fulham’s win puts them in eighth place with 45 points from 29 games, just three points behind fifth-placed Manchester City, which could qualify them for next season’s Champions League.
“It puts us right up there for the European spots and it’s nice to get a goal as well,” Sessegnon told the BBC. He added, “As a team we have one eye [on Europe] and we’re taking it game by game, we just need to keep going.”
Spurs have now lost 15 league games this season. This place them 13th with 34 points from 29 games. Their chance for European football next year relies on winning the Europa League.
Postecoglou reminded reporters, “I said to the players, I’m not going to let anyone just think about Europa and nothing else. We can’t let this league season go the way it has. We’ve lost way too many games, unacceptable.”
