Spanish goalkeeper, David Raya has confirmed his intentions to leave Brentford, amid summer links to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old has been one of the hottest prospects for clubs in search of a goalkeeper, following his outstanding season with the Bees that saw him play every minute of the 2022-23 Premier League season, helping his side achieve a commendable ninth-place finish.
Although Raya has one year remaining on his current contract, and he has turned down Brentford’s contract extension offer, as he hopes to make a big club switch.
Speaking with the Times in a recent interview, he said: “I will always feel close to this team. Being part of the promotion to the Premier League is something I will never forget. I know there are rumours about me leaving.
“There are some options for me to go but obviously Brentford are asking for a lot of money. That could make clubs not want to buy me, it could make them look somewhere else. But if that’s the value they give me then it’s up to them.
“I have a year left on my contract and until then I’m a Brentford player, there’s nothing I can do. I have ambitions to make the next step in my career. I want to try to win titles and to compete in Europe in the next couple of years.
“I’m 27 now and I feel like I’m at the point in my career when I want to make that step up. There are options out there but it’s not just my ambitions, the club also needs to let me go.”
Although Raya has entered the final 12 months of his current deal with Brentford, there are stories that the club will only sanction a sale if their £40m asking price is met.
Regardless of how things pan out, Raya is set to act professionally and do what’s expected of him.
“I’m a professional. If I end up staying at Brentford I will always give my all, that’s my job. If I have to stay, I’ll try to have an even better season than last season,” he said.
Raya has made 161 appearances during his four-year stint as a Brentford player, and could now be set for move away from the club, with rumours saying he’s agreed personal terms with Spurs.
