Trevisan knocks out top seed Jabeur in Guadalajara; Azarenka advances
Tennis

No.54 Martina Trevisan defeated top seed Ons Jabeur to advance to the Guadalajara Open AKRON quarterfinals. The Italian was two points from the loss before reeling in the World No.7 to win 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-3.

Guadalajara is Trevisan’s second hard-court WTA 1000 quarterfinal this season, having reached the same stage in Miami in the spring. The victory is her first win over Jabeur and first Top 10 victory since defeating Maria Sakkari at the United Cup in January.

Trevisan will face American Caroline Dolehide for a spot in the semifinals.

Former No.1 Victoria Azarenka booked her spot in a second straight Guadalajara quarterfinal after defeating Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-1. The heavy scoreline is a deceptive one. Over 1-hour and 42 minutes, the margins were thin between No.23 Azarenka and No.19 Kudermetova.

Kudermetova entered the match undefeated against Azarenka, winning their two prior meetings. Kudermetova showed early that she was intent on keeping that clean record, generating four break points in the first game of the match. But after fending her off, Azarenka built a 4-1 lead, which she protected to take the set.

A semifinalist last year, Azarenka will face No.5 Caroline Garcia next.
