Nigeria qualified for the quarter finals of the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after a commanding victory over Ecuador.
Goals from Shakirat Moshood, Harmony Chidi, Peace Effiong gave the Flamigoes the win over the South Americans, at Dominican Republic. Nigeria tops Group A after collecting their second victory, scoring eight goals in total.
The Flamigoes dominated the game from the beginning, mounting pressure on their opponents. They took the lead midway through the first half when captain Taiwo Afolabi was fouled in the box. Shakirat Moshood converted to make it one nil.
Ecuador managed to contain Nigeria’s skill and pace in the first half, conceding only one goal. However, the second half looked hotter for the Americans as Nigeria added three more goals.
Harmony Chidi scored her first goal of the tournament on a powerful right-footed strike to make it 2-0. An error from substitute Ecuador goalkeeper Melany Pozo allowed Peace Effiong to slot home into an open net and make it three for Nigeria.
Moshood then got her second of the night in stoppage time after receiving a back pass from Chidi.
Ecuador are second on the log, with three points, after defeating the host nations. They play New Zealand next while Nigeria faces the hosts, Dominican Republic.
